Microwave Granola plus Gifts from the Kitchen

As promised I have a healthy recipe for you today after “Sweet Treat Week”.  This one is so simple.  It’s a granola recipe that you can make in you microwave.  This microwave granola is a recipe I got from a lady that lives by my mom.  You have no excuse now for not making homemade granola.  If you can measure up the ingredients, stir,  and push some buttons on the microwave, then you can make this.  I made a few changes to the original recipe.  It was easy to make and so yummy.

Now if you want to go all out and make granola in you regular oven I have a great recipe in my archives.  It’s my mom’s granola recipe.  I also included a bonus recipe for you.  It’s another granola recipe. This is a recipe from one of my dear friends who also happens to be my next door neighbor.  She is very good at eating healthy and makes this granola all the time.  It is also very yummy.

Then I have several ideas for you to make gifts from the kitchen.  It’s getting closer to Christmas and some of these ideas may just be the perfect solution for those people still on your list.  I have also included a picture below of a way you could package up any of the granola recipe I have shared.  Granola is a great gift from the kitchen.  I love to use cellophane bags and ziploc type storage container (that you can get at the grocery store) to help package up my gifts. 

Several of these ideas are more on the healthy side and will be well appreciated after plates of goodies.

Here’s a picture of how to wrap up the granola.  One recipe of the microwave granola will almost fill a 42 oz. oats container.  I use the empty oats containers and wrap them in wrapping paper and tie a ribbon around the container.  So easy!

Here is a picture of the containers I like to use for gifts from the kitchen.  It cost about $2.50 or a package that comes with 2 or 3 containers, depending on the size you get.  I have also been able to find similar containers at the dollar store.

Microwave Granola

Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup butter
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup water
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • 3 cups old fashioned oats
  • 1 cup bran flakes
  • 1 cup peanuts I use cashews
  • 1 cup wheat germ I accidentally left this out
  • 1 cup sunflower seeds
  • ½ cup coconut I used shaved
  • 1 cup slice almonds I didn’t have enough almonds so I used 1/4 cup almonds and 3/4 cup pecans
  • 1 cup raisins craisins or dried fruit if desired (I used craisins and loved them in this)

Instructions
 

  • Combine butter, brown sugar, honey, water, salt and cinnamon in a large glass bowl.
  • Microwave on high for 8 minutes, stirring half way through.
  • Mix in remaining ingredients EXCEPT for dried fruit.
  • Microwave on high for 4 minutes, stirring half way through.  Granola should be a golden color.
  • Mix in dried fruit if desired and mix thoroughly
  • Spread on a cookie sheet to cool, stirring occasionally to prevent large clumps.
  • Store in an airtight container.

Very Healthy Granola

Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup wheat flour
  • 3 cups regular rolled oats
  • 2 cups wheat germ
  • 1 cup chopped almonds
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup golden raisins
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup sesame of flax seeds
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2-4 tsp. cinnamon to taste
  • 1-2 tsp. nutmeg to taste
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 1 cup honey

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl, mix together the wheat flour, regular rolled oats, wheat germ, chopped nuts, raisins, coconut, sunflower seeds, and sesame or flax seeds.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, olive oil, and honey.
  • Add the liquid mixture to the dry mixture in the large bowl and stir until coated.  Spread onto large baking sheet.  Bake at 325 degrees for 25-30 minutes, stirring every 5-8 minutes or so while baking.  Cool completely, then store in an air tight container.  Serve with milk yogurt, eat as a trail mix, etc.  If you don’t eat it all within a week, store it in the fridge.  Makes 10 cups.
