Grilled Teriyaki Burgers with Pineapple

I’m still loving my grill, and these grilled teriyaki burgers with pineapple were a huge hit with the whole family! I originally found this recipe from one of my favorite bloggers, Recipe Girl, and I knew I had to try it. The beef patties are loaded with flavor, thanks to the addition of soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and finely chopped pineapple mixed right into the meat. That little touch of pineapple in the patty adds a subtle sweetness that makes these burgers truly special!

One of the best things about this burger is that you don’t need a lot of toppings—the flavors are bold and delicious on their own. However, I did follow Lori’s suggestion of adding a splash of steak sauce, which brings a nice tangy contrast to the sweetness of the pineapple and teriyaki flavors. I also dressed mine up with light mayo, fresh spinach leaves, and a slice of creamy Havarti cheese, which made the burger even more irresistible.

While the original recipe didn’t mention grilling the pineapple, I decided to throw the slices on the grill, and I’m so glad I did! There’s something magical about grilled pineapple—it caramelizes beautifully and enhances the smoky-sweet flavor of the burger. If you haven’t tried grilled pineapple on a burger, you’re missing out! These teriyaki burgers are a must-make for summer cookouts, and I can’t wait to grill them again.

  • GROUND BEEF (NO LESS THAN 15% FAT- YOU WANT TO KEEP THEM MOIST)
  • CANNED OF PINEAPPLE SLICES
  • LOW-SODIUM SOY SAUCE
  • GREEN ONIONS
  • FRESH GINGER
  • BLACK PEPPER
  • GARLIC
  • HAMBURGER BUNS

Prepare the Burger Patties: In a large bowl, mix ground beef with 2 finely chopped pineapple slices, soy sauce, onions, ginger, pepper, and garlic. Stir until well combined.

Shape the Patties: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions, shaping each into a ½-inch-thick patty.

Preheat the Grill: Heat your grill to medium-high and lightly oil the grates to prevent sticking.

Grill the Burgers & Pineapple: Place the burger patties on the grill and cook for 4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness. At the same time, grill the remaining pineapple slices until caramelized.

Assemble & Serve: Toast the burger buns, then place each patty on a bun and top with two grilled pineapple slices. Add your favorite condiments like teriyaki sauce, lettuce, or mayo for extra flavor.

Can I use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef?
Yes! For a lighter option, you can swap ground beef for ground turkey or chicken. Just be sure to add a little extra moisture, like a splash of soy sauce or teriyaki sauce, to keep the patties juicy.

Do I have to add pineapple to the burger patties?
No, but it adds a delicious, sweet, and tangy flavor that complements the teriyaki sauce. If you prefer, you can leave it out and use grilled pineapple slices as a topping.

How long should I grill the pineapple?
Grill the pineapple slices for 2-3 minutes per side until they have nice grill marks and caramelization. This enhances their sweetness and adds a smoky depth to the burger.

What toppings go well with teriyaki burgers?
Try steak sauce, mayo, spinach, lettuce, Havarti or Swiss cheese, red onion, or even avocado for extra flavor and texture.

Can I make these burgers ahead of time?
Yes! You can prepare the patties and store them in the fridge for up to 24 hours before grilling. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months and thaw before cooking.

What type of buns work best for this burger?
Soft brioche buns, Hawaiian rolls, or sesame seed buns pair well with the sweet and savory flavors of the burger. Toasting the buns adds extra texture!

Can I cook these burgers on the stovetop instead of a grill?
Absolutely! Cook the patties in a skillet over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness.

What sides pair well with teriyaki burgers?
Serve them with sweet potato fries, grilled veggies, coleslaw, or a fresh fruit salad for a balanced meal.

  1. I think the recipe name should be, “Grilled Soy Sauce Burgers with Pineapple”; but nevertheless, it sounds great!

My family had this dish tonight and my 2 and 3 year old girls LOVED them. My husband was a little skeptic about a pineapple burger but he was blown away by how good it was. I love your recipes. They are SO consistently delicious!

  4. We love teriyaki burgers at our house. I love using fresh pineapple. It really makes a better burger in my opinion. We also just started melting a slice of pepper jack cheese on the burger just before taking it off the grill. It is really good that way, too! I have never mixed the pineapple with the meat, though so I may have to try that soon!

  5. I check out foodgawker almost every day–and it never fails that I end up on your blog! I love that your recipes are do-able for families. This one looks FABULOUS! I’ll have to give it a try soon!

I made these the other night. However, I think they need a little kick. I think I may add chopped jalapeno next time.
OR I would make a pineapple salsa to top the burgers (with jalapeno in it).
I used red onion instead of green onion.
    They were a hit.
