Mom’s Sweet Chili Recipe

When I was growing up, every year for Halloween, my mom would make her homemade sweet chili. Since having my own children, I decided to carry on the tradition. Last year, I decided to stray slightly from the original recipe. I wanted to make a quicker, simplified version. My mom’s original recipe required soaking the beans the night before. I opted to utilize canned beans to make life easier.

Mom’s chili recipe also has a secret ingredient—brown sugar. It adds sweetness, but the classic chili powder still gives it that chili kick. This recipe makes a lot. I could feed my family and three of my son’s friends, plus I have leftovers. You could always make half a recipe if you need to. Tomorrow, I’ll show you my favorite thing to do with the leftovers.

bowl of Mom's sweet chili
  • HAMBURGER
  • ONION
  • CANNED KIDNEY BEANS
  • TOMATO PASTE
  • CONDENSED TOMATO SOUP
  • CHILI POWDER
  • BROWN SUGAR

To make this comforting, sweet chili, begin by placing a large stock pot or large dutch oven over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and ground beef, breaking up the beef as it cooks. Stir frequently until the beef is evenly browned and fully cooked, with no pink remaining. Once the beef is done, carefully drain off any excess grease to keep the chili from becoming too oily.

Return the pot to the stove and add in the kidney beans (do not drain), tomato paste, condensed tomato soup, chili powder, and brown sugar. Stir all the ingredients together thoroughly until everything is well combined. This mixture will start to create a thick, flavorful base for your chili.

Bring the chili to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low to maintain a gentle simmer. Cover the pot partially and let the chili cook for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally to prevent any sticking at the bottom. The simmering time allows the flavors to blend together beautifully, giving the chili a delicious balance of sweet and savory.

Once the hour is up, give it a final stir, taste, and adjust the seasoning if needed. Serve warm with your favorite toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, or a sprinkle of green onions. This recipe yields about 8-10 servings, perfect for a cozy family meal or a gathering with friends!

Can I use a different type of meat instead of ground beef?
Absolutely! Ground turkey or ground chicken works well in this recipe and will provide a lighter flavor. For a vegetarian option, you can substitute the meat with additional beans or a plant-based meat substitute.

Can I make this chili in a slow cooker?
Yes! Brown the ground beef and onions on the stovetop first, then transfer them to a slow cooker. Add the remaining ingredients, stir, and cook on low for 4-6 hours or on high for 2-3 hours.

Can I use fresh tomatoes instead of tomato paste and soup?
You can substitute with fresh ripe tomatoes, but it may alter the thickness and sweetness of the chili. Use about 4-5 medium tomatoes, chopped, and add a little extra brown sugar to achieve a similar sweet flavor.

Is there a way to make this chili spicier?
Yes! You can add cayenne pepper, diced jalapeños, or a dash of hot sauce to increase the heat. Adjust the amount based on your spice preference.

Can I freeze this chili?
Yes, this chili freezes well. Allow it to cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container or freezer bag. It can be frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw it in the fridge overnight and warm on the stovetop or microwave until heated through.

How can I make this chili thinner?
If you prefer a thinner chili, just add a bit of water to reach the consistency you desire.

What toppings go well with this sweet chili?
Popular toppings include shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, crushed tortilla chips, or even a dollop of guacamole. These add great texture and flavor to each serving!

Can I use a different type of bean instead of kidney beans?
Yes! Black beans, pinto beans, or even chickpeas can work as substitutes. Use whichever beans you prefer or have on hand.

This has been my go-to chili recipe for more years than I can remember. I always said I should write down the recipe just in case – well I lost the link to this recipe recently and I couldnt find it when I searched online. Thank goodness I had it bookmarked from years ago.

After years of making this recipe, I made some adjustments based on what we love – I substituted the beans for the Busch/Heinz maple and brown sugar beans and used diced tomatoes with the chili seasoning. Our go to when it gets cold out 🙂

Made this tonight. It was a hit with the family. I used turkey meat instead of beef…trying to get hubby a little bit healthier. I also added a can of corn and spiced it up a notch with some cayenne pepper. Was dellish! definitely will be a staple to the recipe book!

  6. I try not to eat more than 20 meat dinners a month, and no meats for breakfast or lunch. That leaves 8-11 meatless dinners. Open on the menu. I try nt to eat too much animal fat for immunity reasons. I like the recipe, but will try microwaved carrots instead of meat. Cooked just to the point of chewy meat texture in bite size bits. I’ll cook the carrots in brown sugar in the vidila onion shaped for Microwave thingy. Thank you for sharing.

  7. Can you tell me how many cups of beans are used in the original recipe for those of us who would rather use dry beans? Thanks!

So I made this tonight and absolutely delicisious! I made a few substitions… used tomato sauce vs. the soup and paste. I also made it with shredded chicken (bought a rotisserie chicken for ease) and added 2 cans of diced tomatoes with chiles and used McCormick’s chili seasoning (used 3 packages). The sweetness of the brown sugar is amazing. I will be making this as a staple for my family.

    1. Hello There,
Could you please tell me how much tomato sauce you used as a substation. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

  12. My family wasn't in love with this chili on it's own. We thought a little more spiciness to counteract the sweetness would have been good.

However, this was so perfect for the topping on Navajo Tacos!

  13. I will have to try this version! I have a similar recipe without the brown sugar and I like to do 1 can each of all different beans. it just makes the chili look really pretty, you should try it!

I made this yesterday and really did like it. I changed a few things and added a few things but it was really good. Hopefully I’ll get it up on my blog in the next day or two. I made this specifically for navajo tacos and it turned out great.

  15. This sound PERFECT for a cold day like today! My mom’s recipe has brown sugar in it too! Yours varies slightly, so I will have to try it. Thanks.
