Today, I’m excited to share a recipe for delicious Philly Cheesesteak Hot Dogs. It’s a twist on two beloved classics—the All-American hot dog and the iconic Philly cheesesteak sandwich!

Imagine combining the juicy, savory goodness of a top-quality all-beef hot dog with the mouthwatering flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak. This recipe delivers exactly that and is as satisfying as it sounds. I used Ball Park Prime all-beef bun-length hot dogs for the base, perfect for filling out a bun and delivering that rich, beefy flavor we all love.

Philly Cheesesteak Hot Dogs

To elevate this hot dog to the next level, you top it with tender, sautéed peppers and onions, just like you would with a traditional Philly cheesesteak. You can use bell peppers you have on hand, but I prefer mini bell peppers.

They’re especially convenient for recipes like when you don’t need a whole large pepper and get a combination of colors too. The combination of sweet, slightly charred peppers and onions adds a delicious depth of flavor that complements the hot dog perfectly.

And, of course, no Philly-inspired dish would be complete without cheese. I kept it simple with slices of white American cheese, which melts beautifully over the hot dog and veggies. However, if you want to elevate the dish even more, swap in your favorite cheese typically found on a cheesesteak, like provolone, or try my recipe for a homemade provolone cheese sauce.

The creamy, melted cheese ties everything together, creating a hot dog experience with the perfect blend of flavors. It’s sure to be a hit at your next cookout!

Begin by heating a tablespoon of olive oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the sliced onions and bell peppers to the skillet. Cook the vegetables, stirring occasionally, until they are softened and slightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.

Once the vegetables are tender, remove the pan from the heat. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste, then cover the skillet to keep the vegetables warm while you prepare the hot dogs.

Fire up your grill and cook the hot dogs according to the package instructions. Grill them until they are heated through and have those classic grill marks that add extra flavor.

Place each grilled hot dog into a bun. Lay a slice of cheese over each hot dog, breaking it into pieces if necessary to fit the bun. The heat from the hot dog will start to melt the cheese, creating a creamy layer of goodness.

Spoon the warm pepper and onion mixture over each hot dog, adding as much or as little as you like. Serve the Philly cheesesteak hot dogs immediately while they’re still warm, and the cheese is perfectly melted.

Can I use a different type of meat instead of hot dogs?
Yes, you can easily customize this recipe using sausages, bratwursts, or vegetarian hot dogs. The key is to choose a flavorful base that pairs well with the sautéed peppers, onions, and melted cheese.

Can I make these hot dogs without a grill?
Absolutely! If you don’t have a grill, you can cook the hot dogs on a stovetop griddle, in a skillet, or even in the oven. Simply follow the package instructions for stovetop or oven cooking, and assemble the hot dogs as directed.

Can I prepare the peppers and onions ahead of time?
Yes, you can sauté the peppers and onions ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When you’re ready to serve, reheat the mixture in a skillet or microwave until warmed through, then assemble the hot dogs.

What kind of buns should I use?
Soft, sturdy buns like classic hot dog buns or hoagie rolls work best for this recipe. They should be substantial enough to hold the hot dog, cheese, and generous toppings without falling apart. You can lightly toast the buns before assembling the hot dogs for added flavor.

What type of cheese works best for Philly cheesesteak hot dogs?
White American cheese is a classic choice because it melts smoothly and has a mild flavor that complements the other ingredients. Provolone is another popular option for a more authentic Philly cheesesteak taste. You could also use cheddar, mozzarella, or even my homemade cheese sauce if you prefer.
