Take your turkey sandwich from ordinary to extraordinary. This recipe for turkey provolone sandwiches will do just that.

It all begins by using a ciabatta roll for each sandwich. The roll has a slightly crisp, golden-brown crust with a soft, airy interior that includes a chewy, open-crumb texture. Its soft yet sturdy form makes it perfect as a base for this sandwich.

The other key to this amazing sandwich is a simple yet incredibly flavorful basil mayonnaise. This homemade spread elevates the sandwich by adding a fresh herbalicious flavor that perfectly complements the savory turkey and creamy provolone cheese. This gotta-make basil mayo recipe transforms an ordinary sandwich into something truly special.

  • MAYONNAISE
  • FRESH BASIL
  • FRESH LEMON JUICE
  • SEA SALT
  • BLACK PEPPER
  • CIABATTA ROLLS
  • OLIVE OIL
  • TURKEY BREAST DELI MEAT (OR CHICKEN)
  • PROVOLONE CHEESE

Start by making the flavorful basil mayo. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, fresh basil, garlic, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir until the ingredients are well combined. Cover the bowl and place the basil mayo in the refrigerator to chill until you’re ready to assemble the sandwiches.

Preheat your broiler. Brush the cut sides of your ciabatta rolls (or your preferred rolls) with olive oil, ensuring an even coating. Arrange the rolls, cut side up, on a sheet pan. Place the baking sheet under the broiler and toast the rolls until they are golden brown. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning.

Assemble the Hot Turkey Provolone Sandwich

Once the rolls are toasted, it’s time to assemble the sandwiches. Divide the sliced turkey into four portions. Place turkey on each bottom portion of rolls, stacking the slices neatly. Place a slice of provolone cheese over the turkey on each sandwich. Then, place a slice of provolone on the top halves of the rolls as well.

Return the assembled sandwiches to the broiler. Broil just until the cheese is melted and bubbly. This should only take a minute or two, so watch closely to avoid overcooking.

Remove the sandwiches from the oven. Generously spread the chilled basil mayo on the inside of the top halves of the rolls. Place the top halves on the melted cheese and turkey, pressing down gently to secure the sandwich.

Serve these delicious turkey provolone sandwiches immediately while the cheese is still warm and gooey. This recipe makes 4 satisfying sandwiches, perfect for a quick and flavorful lunch or dinner. Enjoy!

Can I prepare the basil mayo ahead of time?
Yes, the basil mayo can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. In fact, making it ahead allows the flavors to meld together even more, enhancing the overall taste of the sandwich. Just keep it in an airtight container until you’re ready to use it.

How can I make this sandwich healthier?
To make a healthier version of this sandwich, you can use multigrain or whole grain ciabatta roll, reduce the amount of cheese, and opt for a lighter mayonnaise or Greek yogurt in the basil mayo. Adding extra vegetables like spinach, tomato slices, cucumbers, red onion, or bell peppers will also increase the nutritional value while keeping the sandwich flavorful.

Can I use a different type of cheese instead of provolone?
Yes, provolone is mild and melts well, but you can substitute it with other cheeses like mozzarella, Swiss, or cheddar, depending on your preference. Each cheese will bring its own unique flavor to the sandwich, so feel free to experiment.
