Healthy Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes

I changed my usual Instant Pot mashed potato recipe to make a healthier version of Instant Pot mashed potatoes. If you are watching your calorie intake, mashed potatoes can be a problem. This is because they are typically made with ingredients like butter, cream cheese, sour cream, and cream to enhance their flavor. These high-fat ingredients can add a lot of calories to the dish.
This recipe for these healthy mashed potatoes is only 5 points for me on my WW personal points. I calculated out how much my regular Instant Pot mashed potato recipe would be in WW points. It would be 23 points for 1/6 of the recipe. That’s a big difference!

Ingredients to make healthy Instant Pot mashed potatoes
- RUSSET POTATOES
- CHICKEN BROTH
- SALT
- CANOLA HARVEST BUTTERY SPREAD
- PLAIN FAT FREE GREEK YOGURT
- FAT FREE SKIM MILK

How to Make Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes
To make the recipe healthier and still tasty, use low-fat buttery spread, fat-free Greek yogurt, and skim milk. These ingredients will help reduce the amount of fat in the dish while maintaining flavor.
You can use low-fat buttery spread as a substitute for regular butter. Fat-free Greek yogurt can replace sour cream or mayonnaise.
Skim milk is a healthier option compared to whole milk. Greek yogurt is a healthier option to use in comparison with sour cream, but it gives almost the same results. It’s an easy swap in about any recipe.
I served these mashed potatoes as part of a recipe that I will be sharing with you all tomorrow. Neither my husband or daughter noticed the difference between my regular mashed potatoes and this healthier version. A perfect side dish!

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of masher do you use?
I personally like to mash the potatoes with a hand masher. My husband grew up using an electric hand mixer and didn’t have the little chunks. He now likes the hand mashed because of the little chunks you get. So, it just depends on whether you prefer them more creamy and smooth or if you prefer a little more texture.
How much water do you put in an instant pot for potatoes?
Enough for the potatoes to be completely covered.
Can you leave the skin on the potatoes?
While I prefer a smooth, creamy texture, you can leave the skins on to make it even easier. If you are using russet potatoes, it is best to peel the skin off.
This is because their texture is not as appetizing as red, golden, or Yukon potatoes. Remember this when preparing your dish. The skin of russet potatoes can affect the overall taste and texture.
Can I use other types of potatoes?
Absolutely! However, the timing will need to be adjusted slightly for each type. Red and Yukon gold potatoes cook faster than russet potatoes because they are smaller in size. Russet potatoes take longer to cook due to their larger size.
