easy pepperoni and cheese calzone

I kept these air fryer calzones simple with a classic cheese and pepperoni calzone filling, but you can easily customize them with your favorite pizza toppings. For a heartier option, swap the pepperoni for Italian sausage, veggies, or even a mix of meats. For an extra burst of flavor, I like to sprinkle some Johnny’s seasoning inside, but if you prefer, Italian seasoning works just as well.

While this added seasoning isn’t required, I highly recommend it because it really elevates the flavor of the filling and takes these calzones to the next level! Feel free to experiment and create your own favorite combinations!

  • ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR
  • HONEY
  • OIL
  • WATER
  • YEAST
  • GARLIC SALT
  • PIZZA SAUCE OR MARINARA SAUCE
  • MOZZARELLA CHEESE
  • PEPPERONI
  • ITALIAN SEASONING OR JOHNNY’S SEASONING, OPTIONAL

To make these delicious air fryer calzones, start by mixing all the pizza dough ingredients, except the flour, in a large bowl. Once combined, gradually add in flour and knead until the dough comes together. Split the dough into 4 equal pieces, and using your hands, roll each piece into a circle on a surface sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.

Next, spoon about 1/4 of the pizza sauce onto one-half of each dough circle, ensuring to leave the edges clean. Top the sauce with a layer of pepperoni slices, followed by a layer of shredded cheese. Feel free to sprinkle Italian seasoning or Johnny’s seasoning for added flavor.

Fold the dough over to form a half-circle, and crimp the edges with your fingers to seal them tightly. Place two calzones at a time into your air fryer basket (depending on the size of your air fryer). Air fry at 375°F for 7-10 minutes, turning them halfway through, until they’re golden brown. Serve with extra pizza sauce or ranch dressing for dipping. Enjoy your homemade air fryer calzones!

Can I use store-bought pizza dough instead of making it from scratch?
Yes, you can use store-bought pizza dough for convenience. It works well and will save time, but making homemade dough provides a fresh flavor if you have time. For store-bought dough, you will need 1 pound.

How do I prevent the calzones from opening up during cooking?
Crimp the edges of the dough firmly to prevent the calzones from opening. You can also press down with a fork for extra sealing. Lightly moisten the dough’s edges with water before sealing.

Can I make this calzone recipe ahead of time?
Yes, you can assemble the calzones in advance and store them in the fridge. When you’re ready to cook, just pop them in the air fryer. Keep in mind that you might need to add a minute or two to the cooking time if they’re cold from the fridge.

Can I freeze the calzones?
Yes, you can freeze the uncooked calzones. To freeze, place them on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. You can air fry them directly from frozen, but they will need a few extra minutes of cooking time.

Can I make mini calzones?
Yes, divide the dough into 12 pieces. Proceed just the same to fill them and seal them. Cook them for 5-7 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden brown.

How can I make these if I don’t have an air fryer?
Bake them on a baking sheet in a preheated 425-degree oven for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
