I recently discovered something called South Carolina bird dogs. It’s like a hot dog, however, you use a crispy chicken strip instead of a beef frank. I had never heard of these before but they sounded genius to me. Apparently they are a thing you can find at South Carolina’s Nick Henry’s and J C’s Sandwich Shoppe. Both places are famous for them. On Yelp, they have been called as “Legendary” at J C’s Sandwich shop. It is also referred to as a signature dish at Nick Henry’s.
In addition to the chicken strip, there are 3 other components beside the bun that make up the bird dog. You need slices of cooked bacon along with shredded cheddar cheese and honey mustard dressing or sauce. I used Sweet Baby Ray’s honey mustard dipping sauce. However, it is fairly easy to make your own honey mustard sauce.
These bird dogs were a hit with the family. It was a delicious new approach to the use of the hot dog bun. I now have some other ideas for other versions of a bird dog!
