Many recipes call for buttermilk or yogurt to create a light, fluffy texture and add a subtle tang to baked goods. However, today’s waffle recipe takes it a step further by incorporating both buttermilk and yogurt. This results in an incredibly moist, tender, and flavorful waffle. The combination of these two ingredients enhances the richness and depth, making every bite perfectly balanced between airy crispness and melt-in-your-mouth softness. Whether you love golden, crispy edges or a waffle that’s soft and indulgent, this recipe for Buttermilk Yogurt Waffles delivers the best of both worlds!

Buttermilk in waffle recipes enhances both texture and flavor. Its acidity reacts with baking soda and baking powder, creating carbon dioxide bubbles that make waffles light, fluffy, and tender. Additionally, buttermilk adds a subtle tangy richness, balancing out the sweetness and deepening the overall taste. If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can make a substitute by mixing milk with lemon juice or vinegar to achieve a similar effect.

Yogurt adds moisture, tenderness, and a subtle tang to waffle recipes, making them soft and fluffy while enhancing their flavor. It also contributes protein, making waffles more satisfying and nutritious. Additionally, yogurt helps create a light texture without needing excessive butter or oil, making it a great ingredient for healthier waffles.

Prepare the Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together: four for the base, baking soda & baking powder for lift, salt to balance flavors, and sugar for a touch of sweetness.

Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together: eggs for structure, melted butter for richness, buttermilk & yogurt for tender, slightly tangy waffles, and vanilla extract for warmth. Whisk until everything is fully combined and smooth.

Combine & Rest the Batter: Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined—avoid overmixing for the fluffiest waffles! Let the batter rest for 5 minutes, allowing the ingredients to hydrate and create a better texture.

Heat the Waffle Iron & Cook: Preheat your waffle maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly grease if needed. Pour the recommended amount of batter onto the heated iron, close it, and cook until golden brown on both sides.

Serve & Enjoy: Serve hot with butter, maple syrup, or fresh berries, or keep the waffles warm in a 200°F oven until ready to enjoy. This recipe makes four 8-inch waffles.

Can I substitute regular milk for buttermilk?
Yes! If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make a substitute by mixing 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar and letting it sit for 5 minutes before using.

What type of yogurt works best in this recipe?
Plain Greek yogurt or regular yogurt both work well. Greek yogurt makes the waffles extra thick and creamy, while regular yogurt keeps them light and airy.

How do I prevent my waffles from being too dense?
Make sure to whisk the wet ingredients well and avoid overmixing the batter—stir just until combined. Letting the batter rest for 5 minutes also helps create a lighter texture.

Can I make these waffles ahead of time?
Absolutely! Cook the waffles, let them cool, and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze them for up to 2 months.

How do I reheat leftover waffles without making them soggy?
For crispy waffles, reheat in a toaster or oven at 350°F for 5–7 minutes. Or, place them back in the waffle maker for a minute or two. Avoid microwaving, as it can make them soft instead of crispy.

Can I add mix-ins like fruit or chocolate chips?
Definitely! Stir in blueberries, chocolate chips, or chopped nuts for extra flavor. Just be sure to gently fold them to avoid overmixing.
