There’s just something about summer that makes me want to fire up the grill—and it’s hands-down one of my favorite ways to entertain during the warmer months. The casual, come-as-you-are vibe of a backyard cookout is hard to beat, and when you’re looking for something simple, festive, and fun for a crowd, a hot dog bar is the perfect solution.

Hot dogs are a total win for summer entertaining: they’re quick to cook, affordable, and always a hit with both kids and adults. And in my opinion, there’s no better way to cook them than on the grill. That sizzling heat gives the hot dogs a deliciously crisp exterior and that unmistakable smoky flavor that just screams summer.
So if you’re planning your next outdoor gathering—whether it’s a family picnic, a Fourth of July bash, or a laid-back night with friends—consider setting up a hot dog bar. It’s interactive, easy to customize, and brings a little bit of build-your-own fun to the table. I’ll walk you through exactly how to pull it together and make it a meal everyone will remember.
The Dogs
First, you want to pick a good-quality dog to cook on the grill. Ball Park has a new line of Premium Beef Franks called Ball Park’s Finest. They are a great option.

This is their Finest Premium Hot Dog. Ever. It is available in five outstanding flavors -Slow Cooked Chili, Jalapeño Cheddar, Signature Seasoned, Slow Smoked Hickory, and Cracked Dijon Mustard. We tried all the flavors, except for the Cracked Dijon Mustard.
We loved every single one. However, everyone had their own favorite, and the slow-cooked chili was the most surprising. Everyone was so shocked at how it tasted exactly like a chili dog (This was my favorite).

The other great thing about these frankfurters is that they are made with 100% Beef, 0% Artificial Preservatives, and no Nitrates or Nitrites. This game-changing frank is sure to become a legendary part of your grill.

The Buns
Second, you need buns. Now, don’t just go for those regular white hot dog buns. Those are great for everyday, but you need to go beyond the regular for your hot dog bar. Look for more gourmet-type buns. I got some from my local bakery, but you can even find some on the bread aisle at the grocery store.

The Toppings
The last thing you need is toppings. Since my Ball Park’s Finest beef franks were so full of flavor, I didn’t need to get too elaborate on the toppings. I stuck with mostly classics. I do recommend placing any condiments you can into squeeze bottles. It’s easier for your guests and makes less of a mess.
These are the hot dog toppings I served at my hot dog bar:
- Mustard – use more than yellow mustard. There are many types to choose from, but my favorite is deli mustard.
- Ketchup – There are now flavored ketchups to choose from.
- Barbecue Sauce – again, lots of flavor to pick from
- Sweet Pickle Relish
- Dill Pickle Spears
- Chopped Raw Onion
- Diced Tomatoes

Other great ingredients that you could also include in your toppings bar:
- Mayonnaise
- Ranch Dressing
- Bacon Bits
- Cheddar Cheese
- Salsa
- Hot Sauce
- Roasted Red Peppers
- Pickle Jalapenos
- Diced Green Peppers
- Diced Scallion
- Caramelized Onions
- Baked Beans
- Fresh Cilantro
- Corn
- Guacamole
- Sauerkraut
- Cotija Cheese
- Pineapple
- Blue Cheese
- Feta
- Chives
Sides to serve along with the hot dog bar:
- Potato Salad
- Coleslaw
- Chips
- Macaroni Salad
- Hummus with Vegetables
