I’ve got a warm and cozy drink recipe for you today that’s absolutely perfect for serving on Christmas morning — Hot Mulled Cider. Unlike many other hot juice recipes that call for extra sugar, this one doesn’t need it at all.

The natural sweetness from the fruit juices does all the work, creating a perfectly balanced flavor that’s sweet, tangy, and spiced to perfection. No added sugar means you can feel good about every sip!

I first tried this recipe over Thanksgiving weekend, and it was an instant hit with family and friends. The aroma of warm apples, citrus, and holiday spices filled the house, making it feel extra festive. Everyone kept coming back for more, which is always the best sign of a winning recipe.

This version is adapted from a recipe by Musselmans, but I’ve made a few tweaks to make it my own. It’s simple to prepare, simmers to perfection on the stovetop, and fills your home with the comforting scent of the holiday season. Whether you’re serving it for Christmas morning, a holiday brunch, or a cozy night in, this Hot Mulled Cider is guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser.

  • APPLE CIDER
  • CINNAMON STICKS
  • WHOLE CLOVES
  • WHOLE ALLSPICE
  • ORANGE

Prepare the Cider Base: Pour the apple cider into a crockpot. Add the cinnamon sticks directly into the cider, letting them infuse their warm, spicy flavor as the cider heats.

Create the Spice Bundle: Cut a small square of cheesecloth and place the cloves, allspice, and orange rind inside. Gather the edges of the cheesecloth to form a pouch and tie it securely with kitchen twine or string. This spice bundle will infuse the cider with rich holiday flavors while making it easy to remove later.

Cook the Cider (Crockpot Method): Place the spice bundle into the crockpot with the cider and cinnamon sticks. Cover with the lid and cook on high for 2 hours. As it cooks, your kitchen will be filled with mulled cider’s warm, comforting aroma.

Remove the Spices: After 2 hours, carefully remove the spice bundle and cinnamon sticks from the crockpot. Discard them, as they’ve already infused the cider with flavor.

Serve and Enjoy: Use a ladle to pour the hot cider into mugs. Serve it as-is, or garnish each cup with a fresh cinnamon stick, a slice of orange, or star anise for an extra festive touch. This recipe makes about 16 cups of cider, perfect for serving a crowd during holiday gatherings or family celebrations.

    Stovetop Instructions:
You can make this cider on the stovetop if you don’t have a crockpot. Simply combine the cider, cinnamon sticks, and prepared spice bundle in a large pot. Heat over medium until the cider just begins to boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and let it cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the spice bundle and cinnamon sticks before serving.

This Hot Mulled Cider is perfect for cozy nights in, Christmas morning, or any holiday gathering. It’s warm, flavorful, and filled with festive spices that everyone will love!

Can I use apple juice instead of apple cider?
Yes, but keep in mind that apple cider has a richer, more robust flavor than apple juice. If you’re using apple juice, you may want to add a splash of fresh orange juice or a little extra cinnamon to give it a bolder taste.

Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes, you can prepare the mulled cider in advance. Cook it as instructed, then allow it to cool completely. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When you’re ready to serve, reheat it on the stovetop or in a crockpot until warmed through.

How do I keep it warm for a party?
To keep your cider warm during a party, leave it in the crockpot on the “warm” setting. This keeps the cider at a perfect serving temperature without overcooking it. Just be sure to stir it occasionally to prevent any spices from settling.

How do I make the spice bundle without cheesecloth?
If you don’t have cheesecloth, you can use a tea infuser, a clean coffee filter, or even a small, reusable muslin bag. Tie it securely with string or use a twist tie to keep the spices from escaping.

How long can I leave it in the crockpot?
Once it’s finished cooking, you can keep it on the “warm” setting for up to 4-6 hours. Any longer than that, and the flavor of the spices might become too strong. Remove the spice bundle and cinnamon sticks if the flavor gets too intense.

    Can I freeze leftover cider?
Yes, you can freeze leftover cider. Allow it to cool completely, then store it in a freezer-safe container or a resealable freezer bag. It will keep for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the refrigerator overnight and reheat it on the stovetop or in a crockpot before serving.
