This homemade hamburger helper recipe is hearty enough to stand on its own, but it pairs perfectly with a simple side dish to round out the meal. I love serving it with a crisp green salad or steamed broccoli to balance out the rich, cheesy pasta. Cheesy Garlic Pita Bread or warm one-hour dinner rolls also make a great addition for soaking up every last bit of sauce. If you want to keep things simple, even a quick side of roasted vegetables like oven-roasted squash works beautifully alongside this comforting skillet dinner

Start by placing a large, deep skillet on the stovetop over medium heat. Add the ground beef and chopped onion, cooking until the beef is fully browned and the onion is soft and translucent. Break the beef apart as it cooks so you end up with a nice, crumbly texture. Once the meat is cooked through, drain off any excess grease.

Stir in the minced garlic, parsley, Italian seasoning, oregano, salt, and pepper. Let everything cook together for about one minute, just until the garlic is fragrant and the seasonings have a chance to bloom.

Next, pour in the marinara sauce and beef broth, then add the uncooked noodles. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer, cover the skillet, and cook for about 25 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking, and cook until the pasta is al dente and most of the liquid has been absorbed.

Finally, stir in the cream and shredded cheese until melted and creamy. Turn off the heat and let the skillet sit for about 10 minutes to thicken the sauce slightly. Give it one more good stir, then serve warm and enjoy this rich, cheesy Italian-inspired comfort meal.

Can I use a different type of pasta?
Yes! Small pasta shapes like elbow macaroni, rotini, penne, or small pasta shells work well. Just keep in mind you may need to slightly adjust the cooking time depending on the pasta you choose.

Can I make this ahead of time?
You can make it a few hours ahead and reheat gently on the stove. Add a splash of broth or milk when reheating to loosen the sauce.

Can I freeze cheesy Italian shells?
Yes, but the texture may change slightly because of the cream. Let it cool completely before freezing, and reheat slowly while stirring.

How do I keep the pasta from sticking?
Be sure to stir occasionally while it simmers, especially during the first 10 minutes. Keeping the lid on also helps trap moisture so it cooks evenly.

Tips & Tricks for the Best Results

  • Use freshly shredded cheese for smoother melting and better texture.
  • Simmer gently. Too high heat can cause sticking or uneven cooking.
  • Let it rest. The 10-minute rest time helps the sauce thicken.
  • Want it extra cheesy? Sprinkle more cheese on top and broil for a few minutes.
  • Add veggies. Stir in spinach, mushrooms, or bell peppers for extra nutrition.
  • Make it spicy. Add red pepper flakes or a pinch of cayenne.
