BBQ Ribs in the Slow Cooker

by Laura

Today’s recipe is a bbq recipe for those of you who don’t want to use the bbq but still want that bbq taste.  This BBQ Ribs in the Slow Cooker recipe is a great way to enjoy country style ribs.  The recipe for the sauce is similar to the one used for the saucy boneless rib recipe from my cookbook (sorry, you gotta get that recipe from the book if you want it).  That version slow cooks in your regular oven.

The meat turns out nice and tender.  You could shredded the meat in here and use it for sandwiches too if you would rather.  My family was definitely happy with this recipe.  I didn’t even get to have leftovers!  The bbq ribs in the slow cooker recipe can be easily doubled if you are feeding a crowd or just want leftovers.

  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 Tbsp. canola oil
  • 2 lbs. boneless country style pork ribs
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 Tbsp. prepared mustard
  • 2 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 2 Tbsp. water

Instructions

  1. Place the butter and oil in a skillet. Heat over medium heat until butter is melted.
  2. Season ribs with salt and pepper and place in the skillet.
  3. Brown ribs on all sides. Remove from skillet and place in the slow cooker.
  4. In a bowl, combine the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, and mustard. Once blended pour over the ribs in the slow cooker.
  5. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours.
  6. Carefully remove cooked ribs from the crock pot. They will be very tender.
  7. In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch and water until well blended. Add cornstarch mixture to the sauce remaining in the slow cooker. Stir in to thicken sauce. Serve ribs with sauce. Can be served over cooked rice.

Hi, I was just wondering if this cold be adapted to the low setting on a slow cooker as well? I’m out of the house for 8-10 hours each day. Thanks for your advice/experience!

@Sharon: I was the one that posted previously about how great this recipe was. My co-worker did this recipe the other day and put the ribs on for 8-10 hours on low. It totally backfired! The sauce was burnt on the sides and the ribs were tough. You would think there would be a way to do the ribs on low, but I think with this recipe since you’ve already browned the ribs before placing in the slow cooker, it just works better on high.

i just made this recipe this evening and it turned out wonderful! Our Memorial Day weekend was jam-packed with events and by the time the true holiday day rolled around, we had no plans. I wanted to make something different than the normal routine, more holiday like. What a GREAT way to enjoy ribs! The sauce was raved about, we even dipped our rolls in it! I paired the ribs with cheesy potatoes and it was a family hit. The hubs even said this would make for a nice meal after church. Thank you for posting this recipe, I look forward to making this again.
