I love grilling hamburgers, but when the weather doesn’t cooperate, or I need something fast, I turn to my air fryer. Air fryer hamburgers are incredibly juicy, full of flavor, and so easy to make. While they don’t have that smoky grill flavor, they’re still delicious and ready in a fraction of the time.
Air fryer hamburgers are perfect for busy weeknights when you want a quick meal without a big mess. The air fryer cooks the patties evenly and makes it easier to avoid overcooking, resulting in juicy hamburgers every time. Unlike pan-frying, there’s no grease splattering all over the stove, and cleanup is simple since the air fryer basket wipes clean in minutes.

Once the burgers are done cooking, you can easily add cheese and let it melt by sliding the basket back into the air fryer with the unit turned off. The leftover heat melts the cheese perfectly – without it flying all over the basket.
If you like smaller patties, you can shape four burgers instead of three and simply shorten the cook time to about 8 minutes. This flexibility is one of the reasons air fryer hamburgers are such a great option for a quick, easy, and mess-free meal any night of the week.
Ingredients to Make Air Fryer Hamburgers
- 80/20 GROUND BEEF
- HAMBURGER SEASONING (I LIKE THE MCCOMMICK OR WEBER BRAND)

- CHEESE
- DESIRED HAMBURGER TOPPINGS SUCH AS LETTUCE, PICKLES, TOMATO, ETC

How to Make Air Fryer Hamburgers
To make air fryer hamburgers, start by mixing ground beef with your preferred seasonings in a large bowl. Shape the mixture into three equal-sized patties. Place the patties in the air fryer basket, making sure they’re not stacked, and air fry at 350°F for 12 minutes. Be sure to flip the patties halfway through cooking for even browning. Use a meat thermometer to check that the internal temp reaches 160°F for safe consumption.
Once the burger patties are cooked, add a slice of cheese on top of each burger. With the air fryer turned off, place the patties back in the basket for a couple of minutes to let the residual heat melt the cheese perfectly. Serve the burgers on toasted buns with your favorite toppings and enjoy! This recipe makes 3 servings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cook frozen hamburger patties in the air fryer?
Yes, you can cook frozen hamburger patties in the air fryer. Just increase the cooking time by about 5-7 minutes, depending on the thickness of the patty. Make sure the internal temperature reaches 160°F for safety.
Do I need to flip the hamburgers in the air fryer?
Yes, flipping the burgers halfway through the cooking process ensures they cook evenly on both sides and get that golden-brown finish.
Can I use lean ground beef for air fryer hamburgers?
Yes, you can use lean ground beef, but keep in mind that leaner cuts of meat may result in drier burgers. Consider adding a little oil or butter to the mixture to keep them juicy.
How do I prevent air fryer hamburgers from shrinking?
Hamburger patties shrink during cooking due to fat loss. To minimize shrinking, form the patties slightly larger than the bun, and press a small indent in the center of each patty before cooking. This helps the patty maintain a more even shape.
