Cook the Broccoli: In a large soup pot, combine the broccoli with the chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, then cover the pot and let it cook for about 10 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender.

Prepare the Cheese Sauce: Meanwhile, in a separate large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion turns translucent and fragrant. This should take about 3-4 minutes.

Sprinkle the flour over the cooked onions and stir constantly for 1-2 minutes, allowing the flour to turn golden and eliminate its raw taste. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to create a smooth mixture. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes or until the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency.

Melt the Cheese: Add the shredded cheese to the thickened sauce and whisk until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth. Remove the sauce from heat once combined.

Combine and Season: Carefully pour the cheese sauce into the large pot with the broccoli and chicken broth. Stir well to combine. Add the diced ham to the soup and season with salt and pepper to taste. Continue cooking the soup over low to medium heat until the ham is heated through, ensuring the flavors meld together beautifully.

Serve and Enjoy: Serve the soup warm in a bowl along with your favorite bread or rolls for a comforting and hearty meal. This recipe yields approximately 5 servings—perfect for a family dinner or leftovers the next day!

Can I use frozen broccoli instead of fresh?
Yes, frozen broccoli florets will work well in this recipe. You can add it directly to the pot, but keep in mind that it may cook faster than fresh broccoli, so adjust the cooking time accordingly.

What type of ham should I use?
Diced leftover ham from a holiday meal is perfect for this soup. If you don’t have leftovers, you can use store-bought diced ham or even thick-cut ham slices, chopped into bite-sized pieces.

Can I use a different cheese instead of sharp cheddar?
Absolutely! While sharp cheddar adds a rich, tangy flavor, other cheeses like mild cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Gruyere can be used to suit your taste.

How can I make the soup thicker?
If you’d like a thicker consistency, simmer the soup for longer or add a slurry of cornstarch mixed with water to the pot. Be sure to stir constantly as it thickens.

Can I make the soup lighter?
For a lighter version, substitute the milk with low-fat milk or use half milk and half chicken broth. You can also reduce the amount of cheese or opt for reduced-fat cheese.

Can I make this soup ahead of time?
Yes! Broccoli Ham Soup can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat it gently on the stove, adding a splash of broth if it thickens too much.

Can I freeze this soup?
Freezing is possible, but dairy-based soups can sometimes separate when thawed. If you plan to freeze it, consider leaving out the milk and cheese, and add them fresh when reheating.

How do I customize this recipe?
Feel free to add extra vegetables like carrots, potatoes, or cauliflower for variety. You can also include spices like smoked paprika or garlic powder to enhance the flavor.

    1. No, it is not recommended to can homemade broccoli ham soup, especially since it contains milk, as the dairy component can separate and curdle during the canning process, potentially spoiling the soup; it’s much safer to freeze your soup instead.
