As a girl I went through my mother’s recipe box one summer and made recipe card of all my favorite recipes my mom had. Those cards included these yummy monster cookies. I have always wondered where these cookies got their name. There is speculation out these as to where it came from.
It could be because the cookies are traditionally large in size. Or it could be because of the many items included in the recipe, many recipes include even more items than this one. Or maybe it is because of the amount of calories in the cookies (I choose to completely ignore this notion). I tend to believe it is because the recipe makes so many cookies that cookie monster (or your own little monsters) would definitely be happy. The original recipe my mom was given was double the amount I am sharing with you today. She downsized it way back when because of the massive amount of cookies it made. Now it only make about 5 1/2 dozen. Whatever the reason they got their name, they are tasty and just may turn you into a cookie monster!
One great thing about this recipe is this version includes no flour! It only uses oats so it is great for those who are gluten-free. They also include peanut butter, M&M’s baking pieces, mini chocolate chips, and butterscotch chips.
I think cookies are a great way to start kids off with baking. I also encourage you to have your little bakers do what I did those 20+ years ago. Have them sit down this summer and make their own recipe collections of family recipes that they love.Print
