It’s not very often I get to talk about my kids in my posts. This time I can and want to share a little about my daughter. So sorry for the long story, but it’s all why I ended up with this recipe for easy sugar cookies.
For those of you who don’t know, my daughter has a genetic disorder called Turner Syndrome. Along with Turner Syndrome comes the possibility of a learning disability. My daughter has been diagnosed with that learning disability. It falls within the autism spectrum. She has also been diagnosed with ADHD.
We she was 5, we had been having a therapist come into our home for over a year now. She has helped my daughter to be able to do things that most children he age should be doing, like imaginary play. At one point, her therapist told me our next step was to have very structured play dates. At that point, my daughter didn’t really play or interact with children her own age. She would much rather have conversations with an adult.
Cookies for a playdate
So I was suppose to find a child closer to the age of 3 , because that is what age my daughter is mentally at that time and arrange a half hour play date. The play date was suppose to consist of 2 activities. For her first play date, I decided we would blow bubbles then, they would frost and decorate sugar cookies. My daughters 2 favorite cookies are sugar cookies and ginger snap cookies.
The day before the play date I was getting ready to make the cookies, to have them all ready for the play date. I went to my pantry hoping to find a Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix. I just wanted something quick and easy to whip together and bake. Come to find out I had every other Betty Crocker Cookie mix except sugar cookies.
After finding out I didn’t have a sugar cookie mix, I remembered that my sister-in-law recently was a gem and baby sat my daughter for me. While my daughter was at her house, she was snarffing down some sugar cookie like crazy. My sister-in-law was telling me that the cookies she was eating came from a delicious recipe she makes all the time. She also told me that you don’t have to roll them out and that they are good enough to eat without frosting. So I called her up to see if I could get the recipe to make cookies for the play date. She emailed it right over.
Beware, you’ll become addicted to these easy sugar cookies!
So I made these cookies and they were so easy. I do think I cooked them a little too long the first time I made them. My sister-in-law said she cooked them for 9 minutes and left them on the cookie sheet for a minute or two to get chewy, soft cookies. My oven must cook hotter because they turned out a little crunchy. But let me tell you, even though they turned out crunchy, they were still fabulous. The flavor is so yummy.
Beware if you make these, you’ll become addicted. I totally am an addict now. And the fact that they are so easy to make doesn’t help, because you can whip a batch together in no time it’s hard to not want to make them all the time! They are also so fabulous without frosting.Typing this post right now is making me want to make a batch and throw them in the oven. I do cook them less now (for the 8 minutes). Trust me, you need this recipe.
My daughter and her play date had a fun time and loved the cookies too. You can check out the picture of my daughter enjoying her cookies below when we had the play date. We had pink and purple frosting to decorate the cookies with because my daughter’s favorite colors are pinkalicous and purplicious. just FYI, These cookies also work well to use as a base for mini fruit pizzas!

[…] Easy Sugar Cookies […]
I love making these cookies i make them all the time ! 🙂
Thanks for sharing this fantastic cookie! I just made a practice batch and will be making them again next weekend for my son’s 2 year birthday party. I wanted a yummy sugar cookie that didn’t require frosting and something that was nice and moist vs. crumbly. I didn’t really want kids running through my house with crumbly cookies! These are just wonderful and I can see myself eating a lot of them with coffee! Mine didn’t make as much pretty cracking on top by it’s probably because I rolled them in my hand into a ball before baking. Thanks again!
[…] me. It has a sugar cookie crust that is soft and tender but not too sweet. You can also make regular sugar cookies (even Betty Crockers sugar cookie mix will do) and make mini fruit pizzas or even have a mini fruit […]
[…] Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix, but you could easy adapt it to utilize a homemade sugar cookie like this recipe I have. Just add the lime zest to your recipe and top with the frosting and toasted coconut. […]
[…] Easy Sugar Cookies – these are no roll sugar cookies. You don’t get the heart shape, but you could still make them look cute with frosting and sprinkles. […]
[…] Easy Sugar Cookies – this recipe requires no rolling or cutting. They are great plain or topped with frosting. You could even use food coloring in the dough to make them look festive. […]
I finally made these and wrote about it here: https://tomatoesforapples.blogspot.com/2009/09/super-easy-sugar-cookies.html
Thanks for the great recipe. I'll be making them again!
These look deliciously perfect! I love the crinkly look of them!
Sounds great!
I made these tonight & they are a definite keeper(I cooked them for 9 minutes and they turned out nice and soft). I have to tell you that I'm also in love with your peanut butter cookie recipe as well. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing your story and for this awesome recipe. Your little girl is too cute! My youngest daughter has a lot of anxiety when going on play dates and won't interact with other children her age unless she knows them very well. She's the one hiding in the corner for the entire play date. I am glad your daughter enjoyed making cookies on her play date…what a great idea. 🙂
I made these last night, great easy recipe!
Thanks!!
Ooh, those do look good!
Thank you for sharing your yummy recipes and your darling daughter with us. I have tried several of your recipe's and they are always a hit at our house Thank YOu!
I love all your recipes. Thanks so much for sharing them with us.
Hi,
I found your blog because I have google alerts set for Turner Syndrome. I have a 9 year old with TS. My 7 year old loves to cook/bake and will try these cookies with her. Visit my blog for our story

The cookies look amazing, as does the little cookie monster 🙂 My little guy is autistic and I understand what a big deal that peer interaction is!
They look wonderful, my sons favorite cookie is sugar as well. I will definitely try them out.
Thanks, Laura, for sharing the story of your beautiful little girl. My sister also has Turner Syndrome. I am familiar with everything you have mentioned. My sister is in her late 50's and is President of the Southern California Turner Syndrome organization. She just got back from a big convention in Oregon. I know she could tell you where support groups are here in Utah, if you wanted to know. Perhaps your Doctors already have given you that information, but I thought I'd offer. I'd be happy to contact her for you, or send you her email address. Please feel free to email me if you'd like.
Oh….and the sugar cookies look wonderful! I will make them tonight!!! Thanks for all your great recipes!

Those cookies look prefect with the crackling effect on top, I love that. The last ones I made I rolled out and they were smooth on top, I will definitely have to try your recipe. So glad your daughter enjoyed her play date.
These should be called Quickie Sugar Cookies! Super fast and easy. I have a great recipe I make for Christmas and Valentines, but once in awhile the kids beg for "frosting cookies." And this recipe was perfect for that. They turned out beautifully. I took your suggestion to do half butter and half shortening. It worked really well. And 8 minutes is just right in my oven as well. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing. I wish you luck with your daughter. My 4 year old son has autism. He doesn't have the other things you talked about. But it all is an interesting journey isn't it? It's a day by day process I've found.
I have read your blog for a very long time and have never been compelled to comment before, my neice who is now 17, also has Turner's Syndrome. She has the webbed fingers and toes, a slight learning disability and while she took growth hormones she now stands a proud 4" 5'. Her life is quite normal, she drives, has a nice boyfriend and is a flyer for cheerleading(sometimes little is great). Through all the tears and worries my brother and sister-in-law have shared this mighty little powerhouse has taken it upon herself not to be defined by her disability but to defy it. She will have no children but, intends to become a teacher so she will not have just a couple of kids but, will have 100's to love and care for. I wish you and your family the very best in the journey you are undertaking.
What a beautiful post. The cookies look delicious!
I love sugar cookies but hate rolling them out. I can't wait for the heat wave we're having to pass so I feel like baking again. I'm definately going to make these guys. What kind of frosting did you use, canned or your own recipe?
I'm glad to hear the play date went well!
Is your daughter a fan of the Pink/Purplelicious books? My daughter loves them too.
I just wanted to say hello and give you my support. I also have a special needs child. Although his issues are somewhat different, I know the struggles you are dealing with. Thats for a great blog, I can't wait to try this recipe out! we love cookies!!
