Easy Cheesy Barbecued Sloppy Joes

This recipe came from my experience with all the Kraft/Sam’s Club dinner planner recipes back in August of 2009. I tried several recipes and these Easy Cheesy Barbecued Sloppy Joes was the first recipe that I tired and shared.

When I first made the recipes, I took photos and then discovered I had some camera issues. When I went to take them from my camera’s memory card a bunch of my pictures were no longer there.

Oh, I must tell you I was steaming mad when this happened. I had at least 6 recipes that had no pictures to go with them. One was even for a contest I was entering. I was so fristrated I was going to have to make some of these dishes over.

  • GROUND BEEF
  • GREEN BELL PEPPER
  • ONION
  • BARBECUE SAUCE
  • LARGE HAMBURGER BUNS
  • KRAFT SINGLES

The only recipe that had a picture of back then was these homemade Sloppy Joes. I have since made the recipe again and updated with a more current photo.

Now the sloppy joes are good, but I personally prefer the flavor of my mom’s version better. My family isn’t big on having peppers in their sloppy joes. So my mom’s recipe is the family favorite.

Start this sloppy joe recipe by browning the beef in large skillet. Then drain off any excess grease. Next, add in the geen pepper and onion. Cook and stir until those veggies are crisp-tender.

This is where the barbecue sauce comes in. Add the bbq sauce to the skillet and cook until heated through. Be sure to stir occasionally to prevent the sauce from burning or sticking to the pan.

Next, full the buns with meat mixture and along with one of the KRAFT singles. The recipe calls for 4 large buns. However, you can get more than 4 sloppy joes depending on how full you fill those buns. I was able to get 5 sloppy joes from this recipe with no problem.

Can I use ground turkey instead of ground beef for this recipe?
Yes, ground turkey is a great alternative to ground beef and will still taste delicious in this recipe.

What type of barbecue sauce should I use?
You can use any barbecue sauce you prefer. A smoky or tangy barbecue sauce works well, but feel free to use your favorite brand or homemade sauce.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?
Yes, you can make the sloppy joe mixture ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat it on the stove or in the microwave before serving.

What’s the best way to serve these sloppy joes?
Serve the sloppy joe mixture on toasted buns with a side of coleslaw, potato chips, or a green salad. I served mine with potato salad and watermelon.
