I recently had some friends over, and one of them planned to bring traditional Rice Krispie treats. However, upon arrival, she mentioned that she had run out of Rice Krispies and improvised by using Frosted Flakes instead. Let me just say, her innovation was a resounding success! The Frosted Flakes added a delightful twist to the classic treat, and my son loved them so much that he asked for them just a few days later. This serendipitous moment inspired me to create this versatile recipe for cereal squares.
Necessity truly is the mother of invention. The great thing about this recipe is its flexibility—you can use any cereal you have on hand. Whether it’s Cornflakes, Cheerios, or even Cocoa Puffs, each variation brings its own unique flavor and texture to the treat. I encourage you to experiment with different cereals and let me know your favorite combinations.

Speaking of creative twists, I recently stumbled upon a fun version on my good friend Jamie’s site, Jamie Cooks it Up. She has a delightful Trix version that’s as colorful as it is delicious. The possibilities are endless, so go ahead and give these cereal squares a try with your favorite cereal!
Instructions for Cereal Squares
- BUTTER OR MARGARINE (I USE BUTTER)
- MINIATURE MARSHMALLOWS
- CEREAL (I USED FROSTED FLAKES)
Instructions for Cereal Squares
Melt the Butter and Marshmallows: Melt the butter over low heat in a large saucepan. Add the marshmallows to the saucepan and cook, stirring constantly, until the marshmallows are completely melted and the mixture is well blended. Remove from heat.
Combine with Cereal: Mix in the cereal, ensuring it is evenly coated with the melted marshmallow mixture.
Press into Pan: Press the cereal mixture into the bottom of an 8 x 8-inch pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray. If you prefer thinner squares, you can use a 9 x 13-inch pan instead.
Cool and Cut: Allow the cereal mixture to cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, cut into squares and enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I prevent the marshmallow mixture from sticking to the saucepan?
To prevent sticking, make sure you melt the butter first and continuously stir the marshmallow mixture over low heat. You can also lightly spray your saucepan with cooking spray before adding the ingredients.
Can I add mix-ins to the cereal squares?
Absolutely! You can add mix-ins like chocolate chips, dried fruit, nuts, or sprinkles to customize the squares to your taste. Add them to the cereal before mixing with the marshmallow mixture.
How do I make the cereal squares firmer?
If you prefer firmer cereal squares, you can reduce the amount of butter slightly or press the mixture more firmly into the pan. Allowing them to cool completely before cutting will also help them set better.
How do I store leftover cereal squares?
Store leftover cereal squares in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, you can refrigerate them, but allow them to come to room temperature before serving for the best texture.
Can I use marshmallow fluff instead of marshmallows?
Yes, you can use marshmallow fluff as a substitute. Use an equivalent amount by weight and follow the same steps to melt and combine with the cereal.
How do I make the squares easier to cut?
To make cutting easier, lightly grease your knife with cooking spray or butter. This will prevent the knife from sticking to the marshmallow mixture.
