Air Fryer Chicken Tacos

I’ll be honest – hadn’t tried cooking raw protein in my air fryer before now. But that changed when I decided to make Air Fryer Chicken Tacos, and I’m so glad I gave it a shot. The chicken cooks up in about 15 minutes, making it a quick and easy option for taco night. The only thing you need to plan for is a little marinating time, which is completely worth it for the flavor.

The chicken soaks for about two hours in a simple but flavorful marinade made with taco seasoning, olive oil, and fresh lime juice. I like to add a little salt and pepper as well to round everything out. That marinade helps keep the chicken juicy while infusing it with bold taco flavor. Once it’s done marinating, it goes straight into the air fryer, where it cooks up tender, flavorful, and ready to slice for tacos.

I like to use chicken tenders for this recipe because they cook quickly and evenly in the air fryer. If you prefer to use chicken breasts, that works great too—just slice them into tender-sized strips before adding them to the marinade. Cutting them into smaller pieces helps them cook faster and ensures every bite is packed with flavor.

The result is incredibly tender, moist, and juicy chicken with just the right amount of charred flavor. It honestly tastes as if it came straight off the grill. One of my favorite things about using the air fryer is how hands-off it is—there’s no need to flip or babysit the chicken. Just place it in the basket, set the timer, and use that time to prep your tortillas, toppings, and sides.

And don’t stop at tacos! This flavorful air fryer chicken is just as delicious sliced over a salad, layered onto nachos, tucked into quesadillas, or used for burrito bowls. Once you try it, you’ll want to keep this chicken recipe on repeat.

  • CHICKEN TENDERS
  • TACO SEASONING
  • OLIVE OIL
  • LIME JUICE
  • TORTILLAS
  • DESIRED TOPPINGS SUCH AS SHREDDED CHEESE, SOUR CREAM, SHREDDED LETTUCE, SALSA, GUACAMOLE, ETC.

Place the chicken tenders in a gallon-sized zip-top freezer bag. Add the taco seasoning, olive oil, and lime juice, along with a little salt and pepper if you’d like. Seal the bag and gently knead it with your hands to evenly coat the chicken in the marinade. Place the bag in the refrigerator and let the chicken marinate for about 2 hours to really build flavor.

When you’re ready to cook, remove the chicken from the marinade and place the tenders in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook at 360°F for about 15 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.

Once done, remove the chicken from the basket and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing. Serve the sliced chicken in warm tortillas with your favorite toppings like shredded cheese, lettuce, salsa, sour cream, or guacamole. This recipe serves about 4 people.

How long does the chicken need to marinate?
About 2 hours is ideal for the best flavor, but if you’re short on time, even 30 minutes will still add great taste.

What temperature should the chicken be cooked to?
The internal temperature should reach 165°F to ensure it’s fully cooked.

Do I need to flip the chicken in the air fryer?
No, flipping isn’t necessary. The air fryer circulates heat evenly, so the chicken cooks through without turning.

Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes. You can marinate the chicken earlier in the day and cook it when ready. Cooked chicken can also be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Can I freeze the marinated chicken?
Yes. Place the chicken and marinade in a freezer bag and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before air frying.

What else can I use this chicken for?
It’s great in salads, burrito bowls, quesadillas, nachos, or wraps.

Tips & Tricks

  • Cut evenly-sized pieces if using chicken breasts so they cook at the same rate.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. Cook in a single layer to ensure even cooking and slight browning.
  • Let the chicken rest before slicing. This keeps it juicy and prevents moisture loss.
  • Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor.
  • Adjust the seasoning to taste. Add extra taco seasoning or a pinch of chili powder for more kick.
  • Warm your tortillas before serving—they’re more flexible and taste better.
  • Prep toppings while the chicken cooks to make taco assembly quick and easy.
