Start by preheating your oven to 400°F—you’ll be baking both the hot dogs and the garlic bread buns at the same time, so everything comes out hot and ready together.

In a small bowl, combine softened butter, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried parsley. Stir until smooth and well blended—this flavorful garlic butter will transform your buns into something truly special.

Take your hot dog buns and gently open each one without tearing them apart. Spread a generous layer of the garlic butter inside each bun, making sure to coat both sides. Arrange the buttered buns on a baking sheet and sprinkle shredded cheese over each one. The cheese will melt into the garlic butter and create a gooey, savory base for your hot dogs.

Next, place the hot dogs on a separate baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to score each hot dog with three to four shallow diagonal cuts—this helps them cook evenly and adds a little visual flair. Brush each hot dog with the remaining garlic butter for extra flavor and a glossy finish.

Bake both the buns and hot dogs in the preheated oven for about 8 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the hot dogs are heated through. If you’d like your buns extra crispy and golden brown, pop them under the oven’s broiler for 1–2 minutes, keeping a close eye to prevent burning.

Finally, nestle each hot dog into its cheesy garlic bread bun and serve immediately.

Can I use regular sandwich buns instead of hot dog buns?
Yes! If you don’t have hot dog buns, soft sandwich rolls or hoagie buns work well. Just slice them lengthwise and follow the same garlic butter and cheese steps.

What kind of cheese works best for this recipe?
Shredded mozzarella, cheddar, or a blend of both melt beautifully and pair well with the garlic butter. You can also use provolone or pepper jack for a little kick.

Can I make these ahead of time?
You can prep the garlic butter and assemble the buns ahead, but for best texture, bake them fresh. If needed, reheat assembled hot dogs in the oven at 350°F for 5–7 minutes.

Do I have to score the hot dogs before baking?
Scoring helps the hot dogs cook evenly and gives them a fun, slightly crisped texture. It’s optional, but recommended for best results.

Can I cook the hot dogs and buns together on one sheet pan?
It’s best to keep them separate so the buns don’t get soggy from the hot dog juices. Use two pans for even baking and crisp texture.

Can I add toppings like onions or jalapeños?
Absolutely! Add sliced onions, jalapeños, or even a drizzle of mustard or ketchup after baking for a personalized twist.
