Croque Monsieurs – You are probably asking “what in the world is that?”  Well, basically it is a French version of a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.  It originated in French cafes and bars as a quick snack and usually involves Emmental or Gruyère cheese.

Now if you want you can go all out and use Gruyère for this recipe, you can.  I priced the cheese when I went to Sam’s Club.  It was $12 for a pound for Gruyère.  However, Swiss cheese is a less expensive close substitute that can be used with similar results. So either one will work great.

Now this version of croque monsieur is baked instead of grilled.  This version also gets cheese inside the sandwich along with a topping of cheese sauce plus it is all served on a buttery croissant!  All the makings of a great sandwich! Don’t worry about calories on this one.  This is a occasional dish, one to be enjoyed.  It’s not like you eat this every day.  These Croque Monsieurs are deliciously buttery and loaded with cheesy goodness.

  1. I live in Belgium right now due to the US military and these are in every cafe here. Usually they have a pineapple in them and then on top of the bread when served. It is really yummy =)
