Croque Monsieurs – You are probably asking “what in the world is that?”  Well, basically it is a French version of a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.  It originated in French cafes and bars as a quick snack and usually involves Emmental or Gruyère cheese.
Now if you want you can go all out and use Gruyère for this recipe, you can.  I priced the cheese when I went to Sam’s Club.  It was $12 for a pound for Gruyère.  However, Swiss cheese is a less expensive close substitute that can be used with similar results. So either one will work great.

Now this version of croque monsieur is baked instead of grilled. Â This version also gets cheese inside the sandwich along with a topping of cheese sauce plus it is all served on a buttery croissant! Â All the makings of a great sandwich! Don’t worry about calories on this one. Â This is a occasional dish, one to be enjoyed. Â It’s not like you eat this every day. Â These Croque Monsieurs are deliciously buttery and loaded with cheesy goodness.
