Before we talk about today’s recipe for Sour Cream Chocolate Frosting I have just a quick FYI. I will be giving a cooking demo at the Utah Valley Women’s Expo tomorrow Friday Sept 13 at 2 pm. If you happen to be going come stop by. I would love to see you. Also, copies of my new cookbook Warm Your Winter will be available for purchase along with the new 2nd edition of Real Mom Kitchen Cookbook (it contains 10 new recipes and updated photos). Now on to the recipe.
Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting is one of my husbands favorite treats. I recently decided to be a nice wife and make him a chocolate cake. However, being the foodie I am I wanted to try a new frosting recipe on the cake.
I have enjoyed a sour cream frosting on banana cupcakes, banana cake, and a zucchini cake before. So I thought I am sure a chocolate version would be equally delicious. I was right it was quite scrumptious. So next time you are in the mood for a chocolate cake give this sour cream chocolate frosting recipe a try.
Here is what you need to make the
Sour Cream Chocolate Frosting
- SEMI SWEET CHOCOLATE CHIPS
- BUTTER
- SOUR CREAM
- VANILLA EXTRACT
- SALT
- POWDERED SUGAR
Sour Cream Chocolate Frosting
Ingredients
- 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
- 4 Tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 3/4 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- In a microwave safe bowl, add chocolate chips and butter. Microwave at 20 second intervals stir after each time until smooth and well blended. Allow to cool to room temperature.
- Using a mixer, blend sour cream, vanilla, and salt into the cooled chocolate mixture. Then blend in powdered sugar a cup at a time until nice and blended.
- Makes enough to give a nice covering to the top of a 9 x 13 cake.

Would it turn out if I just used a whisk instead of an electric mixer? I don’t have a mixer, but this looks really good, I’d like to try it out.
Thanks for sharing! I have a great new chocolate cake recipe for a 9 x13 pan and was looking for a great frosting. I can’t wait to try it.
When do you add the chocolate mixture
Read #2 in the above directions carefully. It tells you right there what to do with it. 🙂
