I was recently at my favorite shake shop ordering my all time favorite shake – Nutella!!!!!!!! I dream about it all the time!
Upon ordering my shake, I was telling the man taking my order, that their Nutella shake was my weakness! This man happened to be the manager of said shake shop. He told me to enjoy it while I can.
He then proceeded to tell me that there was a shortage of hazelnut crops recently. Apparently, their supplier told them the price of Nutella would consequently be going up. Due to the price hike, their shop would no longer be able to offer Nutella shakes. That was at least until the price comes back down.
I was in shock, say it ain’t so! Nutella Shortage?????? I went to sit and wait for my shake. I quickly pulled out my smart phone to do a quick Google search to find out if this could possibly be true!
Sure enough I found an article on the Huffington Post from August! According to the article, “Turkey produces over 70 percent of the world’s hazelnuts, but has been plagued by hailstorms and frosts, pushing the price of hazelnuts up to the highest it’s been in 10 years. With Ferrero, Nutella’s parent company, using 25 percent of the world’s hazelnut supplies and putting over 50 hazelnuts in each jar, don’t be surprised if the shortage requires you to dish out a bit more for that chocolaty, gooey goodness.”
So I sat there and savored my delicious Nutella shake, knowing that it could be my last from my favorite shake shop. I also may or may not have taken a Costco trip after to stock up on one of my favorite chocolate hazelnut spread.
