Pain Perdu (a.k.a. french toast)


Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 Tbsp sugar, divided
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 8 slices day-old French bread (about 1 inch thick)
  • 2 cups sliced strawberries
  • 2 tsp grated orange peel
  • 4 tsp butter, divided
  • 2 Tbsp powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together milk, 1 Tbsp sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, salt, and eggs until well blended.
  2. Place bread slices in a 13 x 9–inch baking dish. Pour egg mixture over bread and turn to coat. Let stand at room temperature 20 minutes, turning occasionally, until egg is absorbed.
  3. in a small bowl, strawberries, remaining 1 Tbsp sugar, and orange peel. Let stand 20 minutes.
  4. Melt 2 tsp butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add 4 bread slices to pan and cook until golden on each side. Repeat with remaining butter and bread.
  5. To serve, place 2 slices of bread on a plate. Sprinkle each serving with 1 1/2 teaspoons powdered sugar; top each with 1/2 cup strawberry mixture. Serves 4.
