We clean out and toss the old leftovers about once a week. But I probably need to go through all the condiment bottles and toss the expired ones.

I try to take a little time every week – on Tuesdays usually to go through and throw out at least a few things that have gone bad, etc. I choose Tuesdays because I am on my way out with the trash for our Wed Garbage day. Just add it to my taking the garbage out routine!

My fridge is a disaster. I am horrible about cleaning it out, and my parents are even worse. Theres things in there that should probably get up an walk away. I do try to keep things like leftovers well labled and things I put in my freezer.

I have grandchildren who are there most days so have a shelf in the fridge that the children can go into and take what they want. Sometimes I have to tell them to shut the door because they are taking so long deciding.

I try to keep leftovers on a specific shelf, that’s at eye level. I also make sure that all leftovers are in clear containers so that I can see what they are and have masking tape handy when putting them away so they get dated. Then I don’t have to try and remember “when did we have this pot roast?”

Here is my tip: I used to dread cleaning out the frig!! Moldy and stinky foods!! Now, I am very selective in what I save. I only save what I know 100% that I will use. Now my frig stay clean twice as long!

I put a washable mat underneath the bottom shelf, so if their are any spills, it is much easier to clean by pulling the mat out and rinsing it off!

I think it starts with cleaning out all the old expired food, sauces, and dressings. It is amazing how you only use half a bottle of this and that and then when you go to use it again it has expired.

My fridge needs help! With two little ones getting in it all the time, and just standing there, I’m always saying “Close the fridge!”

Wipe off the shelves as you are putting the new groceries away. It’s so much easier to keep something clean if you are cleaning weekly. And use up the leftovers. As you add to the leftovers in the fridge, pull the older ones forward and put the newer ones in the back, then you use up the oldest food first.

My fridge makeover tip would actually apply before you bring home a new fridge. Really look critically at all the refrigerators when you’re shopping. How easily do the shelves come out/apart for cleaning? How easily would it be to organize the typical contents of your fridge in the one you’re considering? Maybe doing a little work ahead of time would make a makeover a little less necessary down the line?

Oh, how I need to clean out the fridge!
Always keep drinks in neat rows, so you will know when you need to restock on a certain soda, water, or juicebox! Different rows for different colors of gatorade or types of soda, keeps it so organized (And looks good too!)
This helps for those “mom there’s no cold blue gatorades, and I don’t like the red!!” moments.

Is it bad to say that the best weapon I have to keep my fridge clean and organized is my husband?! He is the one that can’t stand an unorganized fridge…in fact on Saturday he asked me ” Now the fridge is on the list today right?” Well it wasn’t on mine 🙂 He is awesome!

The thing that helps me the most is to group like things together. So all salad dressing go on the same shelf on the door, milk always is on the same shelf, as well as any other drinks, leftovers get one shelf, and so on. The real hard part is getting everyone else in the house to put it back where it came from!

I have to agree with Danielle about the labels. Even if you know “what” the food is, you may not know how old it is. Dating the labels helps me decide if it is time to eat it or throw it out! Also, I do my best at keeping like items together (all of the salad dressings and sauces in the same door shelf;most of our condiments like jellies, mustard, mayo, etc on one door shelf; pickle jars on one door shelf, etc.) When I buy new juice or milk, I put it in the back behind the half empty containers because you know those teenagers are going to grab the first one they see!!

Hi…Laura…I need to get my fridge ready for the holidays too! It looks like we may have the same fridge…..I raised my deli drawer a few notches higher than the produce drawer and it gave me 4 useable shelves instead of 3. Just thought I would mention that in case you haven’t thought of it. Have a great day!

I always label my containers! That way I know what is in the plastic container and when we put it there.
