I love making and eating muddy buddies.. The task of making the regular chex mix is left up to my 5th son. He started making it when he was in high school and he hasn’t stopped making it every year for me.

Kim December 8, 2010 - 8:00 am

My grandma used to make this really good Chex mix with Kix and Bugles, and a bunch of nuts…it is so delicious. A few years ago I saw the recipe and it included 1 cup bacon fat. No wonder it was so good.

My grandmother would always make what she called “Texas trash” which was a spicy Chex mix with pretzels and nuts…I would pick out every pecan and eat them before anyone else could get to them.
I make it myself now and my husband usually eats a half gallon (At least!) by himself.

Jessie December 7, 2010 - 6:34 pm

I learned how to make the traditional homemade mix as a kid because I liked it so much better than the pre-made. Of course, the newer chocolate versions of the pre-made are a different story! 🙂

shirley elizabeth December 7, 2010 - 6:14 pm

I’ve been making the original chex mix with my, spike it up a notch spin on it , for over 25 years. I give this with a hot and spicy nut recipe, cookies and homemade hot and sweet mustard. One year, I thought maybe I wouldn’t bother, my then teenage son, said “well we may as well not even celebrate the holiday because Christmas includes your Chex Mix.”

Kim December 7, 2010 - 2:27 pm

My favorite Chex Mix is the original recipe. My grandma always used to make it for the holidays. I love the Cheerios that soaked up the sauce. Yummy!

anne d. December 7, 2010 - 1:23 pm

My Dad makes amazing chex mix based off the original and through out the years it has morphed with different tastes but the basics are always there and my brother and I both in our late 20’s can’t replicate it so we have to make a special request and trip home to get some of dad’s good stuff!

The Royal Cook December 7, 2010 - 1:09 pm

I didn’t grow up on Chex mix, but remember the first time I tried it. It was in high school and one of my friends brought it for a party. I honestly don’t think I have had it since. I guess I will have to make some.

Katie December 7, 2010 - 12:48 pm

My mother-in-law makes one with white chocolate in it. I don’t know the exact recipe but it is good. It’s a New Year’s Eve treat.

Several years ago Chex had a Winter Witch mix as part of the release of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. My family loved it, but we lost the recipe and have not been able to find it online anywhere. We have tried remaking it from memory, but I am sure we have forgotten something.

Kim December 7, 2010 - 9:07 am

Wendy W. December 7, 2010 - 6:55 am

When my boys were small, we would make Chex mix and watch the Christmas specials – Rudolph and Frosty and Charlie Brown Christmas. They’re grown now, but we still watch the shows with a big bowl of Chex mix – it’s a simple thing that brings warm fuzzy feelings of all the Christmases we’ve shared 🙂

patti December 7, 2010 - 6:52 am

i remember making “muddy-buddies/puppy-chow” for Christmas one year and my little nephew LOVING it! So for his birthday he asked his mom to make “reindeer poop” like Aunt Sam made. No idea where he came up with that name but we had a good chuckle over that one! And needless to say we now all call it “reindeer poop”!
